How Often Should You Cleanse Your Crystals?

Generally, cleanse your crystals every 1-2 months.

However, in certain situations—such as if your crystal has been exposed to heavy negative energy (e.g., hospitals, funeral homes, or mourning ceremonies)—you should cleanse it more frequently, about once a week.

You can also tell when a crystal needs cleansing by observing:

The crystal appears cloudy or dull (no longer clear and vibrant).

It feels heavy, dense, or oppressive when worn or held.

These signs indicate that the crystal’s energy has weakened and it’s time for a cleanse.

✅ Works for: All crystals

1. Crystal Cluster / Geode

Placing your crystal on a natural cluster or inside a geode effectively cleanses it. Clusters and geodes have a stable, self-renewing energy field that naturally purifies crystals by resetting their vibrations.

❌ Avoid: Light-colored, porous stones like jade, malachite, and howlite.

2. Smudging (White Sage)

Many ancient cultures use white sage smoke to cleanse crystals by shifting their energy. However, avoid this method for triclinic and monoclinic crystals (e.g., malachite, jade, howlite), as their porous structure can absorb smoke and discolor.

✅ Works for: All crystals

3. Moonlight Charging

Moonlight (reflected sunlight) gently recharges crystals. Full moons are especially powerful.

❌ Avoid: All colored crystals (risk of fading/discoloration).

4. Sunlight Charging

Direct sunlight is a strong energy cleanser. Place your crystal in the sun for 2 hours in the morning. However, avoid sun exposure for colored crystals (e.g., amethyst, citrine, rose quartz), as UV rays can cause fading or oxidation due to their iron (Fe) or copper (Cu) content.

❌ Avoid: Stones containing metals or reactive elements.

5. Sea Salt Bath1

Soak your crystal in natural sea saltwater for 12+ hours, then rinse and dry it (sun or shade). Avoid this method for metallic or chemically sensitive stones (e.g., lapis lazuli, hematite, sodalite), as salt can corrode them.

✅ Works for: All crystals (last-resort method).

6. Earth Burial (Grounding)

Burying a crystal in soil is one of the strongest cleansing methods, ideal for severely depleted crystals (e.g., if they’ve turned dark, cloudy, or developed strange inclusions). This method can take weeks or months. It’s also a way to retire a crystal by returning it to the earth.

❌ Avoid: Soft or metal-rich stones (risk of erosion).

7. Running Water

Hold your crystal under natural running water (spring, stream) for 10-15 minutes to wash away stagnant energy. Avoid this for water-soluble or fragile crystals (e.g., selenite, halite).

✅ Works for: All crystals

8. Sound Cleansing

Sound vibrations (singing bowls, tuning forks, drums) reset a crystal’s energy. No restrictions on crystal type.

✅ Works for: All crystals

9. Clear Quartz / Cleansing Stones

Clear quartz or dedicated cleansing stones absorb and neutralize negative energy.

  • Place your crystal on a bed of clear quartz (or in a cleansing bowl) for 5-6 hours.
  • Replace cleansing stones every 6 months.
